Refilling the Well
Sometimes we need to recharge--emotionally, creatively, spiritually, physically, mentally. We need a break, a pause to gather energy for a new burst of creativity.
For me, hiking and reading refill that well. Also, the chance to have some slow-paced time in which I don't have to hurry, meet a deadline, or do much of anything.
Before he got into geocaching, my husband went orienteering a lot, and sometimes I went along. In orienteering, you're trying to find stations in the woods using only a map, compass, and clues. It's like a combination scavenger hunt and hike, and it sharpens your map-reading skills. But to make it competitive, there's also a time element at orienteering meets: it's not just about who finds all the stations, but who finds them the fastest. Many people even run the courses, which I always refused to do. I said, "I spend most of my life rushing to get things done, having to be somewhere at a certain time. When I'm in the woods, I don't hurry." And so we did the courses for fun, not for the competitive aspect. I can imagine that running the courses replenishes some people's wells (we all have different needs, after all). But for me, nothing refills my well like being able to take my time.
